Toto Cutugno an Renowned Italian singer Passed away at 80

Toto Cutugno, an Italian singer best known for his 1983 global smash L’Italiano, passed away this afternoon at Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital. In July, he turned 80.

Cause of Death

At around 4 p.m. local time, Cutugno passed away in a hospital in Milan, according to his manager Danilo Mancuso. The legendary musician had been suffering health concerns for months before to his passing, but given his enduring legacy, the devastating news nevertheless came as a shock.

With over 100 million albums sold and participation in 15 Sanremo Festival editions, Cutugno is one of the most popular musicians in Italy. At the 1980 Sanremo festival, when his soaring song “Solo noi” won first place, Cutugno had his major breakthrough. The song established Cutugno as a prominent voice and dominated charts domestically, as well as in Belgium and Switzerland, where it peaked at #1 and #2.” Prior to the Mneskin, he represented Italy as the final winner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 with the song “Together: 1992,” which celebrated the unification of Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he was at the top of the charts both as a performer of his own songs and as a producer and songwriter for others, particularly Adriano Celentano. With “L’Italiano,” his success is made known to everyone.

About 20 albums were released by Cutugno. He produced approximately 300 songs, many of which were performed by artists including Dalida, Ricchi e Poveri, Mireille Mathieu, Celentano, and Ricchi e Poveri.
