On Monday, Panama experienced a magnitude 5.4 earthquake, as per the report by the US Geological Survey. The quake epicenter was situated nearly 37 miles (59 km) away from Nargana, a Caribbean island. This seismic event briefly sent tremors through Panama City, the nation’s capital.
The Geoscience Institute of the Central American country, IGC, promptly conducted an initial assessment and suggested a magnitude of 6.2. Fortunately, no immediate reports of damage emerged in the aftermath.
Subsequently, the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) provided a second assessment, concurring with the USGS findings and estimating the earthquake’s magnitude to be 5.4. Similar conclusions were drawn by other institutions as well. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), responsible for monitoring quakes in the broader Haiti region, and the citizen-seismograph network known as RaspberryShake, both independently reported magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.4 for the same seismic event, respectively.
