After Gauff’s triumph at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, the illustrious crowd exploded in cheers. Gauff, 19, becomes the first American teenager to win the US Open women’s final 2023 since Serena Williams, a 23-time major champion, did it in 1999. The victory marked the maiden grand slam of her professional career.
Gauff, who was overcome with emotion after her victory, stated, “I feel like I’m in shock right now.” You go through difficulties and tribulations because God is with you, which makes this moment sweeter than I could have dreamed.

She expressed gratitude to her loved ones, her staff, and “the people who didn’t believe in me.”

The soon-to-be women’s world No. 1 Sabalenka, who is vying for her second major championship of the year, breezed through the opening set by breaking Gauff’s serve three times en route to a commanding 6-2 victory.

Gauff lifted her game in the second set, moving up a break before eventually winning it 6-3 to force a crucial third set, though, as the loud audience chanted “Let’s go Coco.”

Gauff’s Historic Achievement and Emotional Victory

Gauff joins Williams and Tracy Austin as the third American kid to win the US Open championship with his triumph. She is on track to rise to No. 3 in the WTA singles rankings and share the top spot in doubles with her countrywoman, Jessica Pegula.

Gauff fell to the ground after sealing the victory before standing up to embrace Sabalenka. Gauff was overtaken with emotion and knelt to absorb the experience.

After the game, Gauff thanked her family while making fun of her father. She said, “Thank you first to my parents. The first time I’ve ever seen my dad tear up was today. He doesn’t want me to tell y’all that, but he got caught in 4K!”

“I used to compare my tennis to how valuable I thought I was. I used to believe that I wasn’t worth it as a person when I would lose. The constant reminder from my parents that they love me no matter what I do has, therefore, been helpful to me today.

Gauff acknowledged that Venus Williams and Serena Williams “paved the way for me to be here” when questioned about the significance of becoming the most recent Black woman to win the women’s singles title. She also said that watching Sloane Stephens win the US Open women’s final in 2017 had encouraged her.

“I hope that another girl sees this and realizes that they can succeed. Ideally, their name will also be on the trophy.”

Gauff also told reporters that her parents had supported her when she would be overly critical of herself or put too much emphasis on winning or losing.

Despite the setback, the Belarusian star will overthrow Iga Witek’s 75-week rule at the top of the WTA singles rankings on Monday.

“I hope we play in many more finals,” Sabenka said after congratulating Gauff, calling her “amazing.”

In response, the American praised Sabenka for reaching the top spot. She said, “Aryna is a fantastic player. Congratulations on reaching the top spot; you deserve it.

Sabalenka claimed she had begun “overthinking” during the second set of the match and that the defeat was a “lesson” for her during a press conference following the match.

Gauff also revealed to reporters that her parents supported her when she became too self-centered.

“It’s mine against me,” she declared. Gauff “was defending better than anyone else and was moving.”

She said, “I was playing against the crowd.
